Biography
Aleksandr Yefimovich Zeldovich (Russian: Александр Ефимович Зельдович; born 4 December 1958 in Moscow) is a Russian filmmaker, theater director, and screenwriter. Considered one of the cult Russian filmmakers, a notable feature of Zeldovich's career is that since 1990, his feature films have been released exactly once every 10 years, at the beginning of each decade.
In 1980, he graduated from the Faculty of Psychology at Moscow State University. In 1986, he graduated from the Higher Courses of Screenwriters and Directors, having studied under Gleb Panfilov and Alexander Mitta. Since 1986, he has been a director at the Mosfilm Film Studio. He made his feature film debut in 1990 with "Sunset," a fantasy based on the themes of Isaac Babel. The film was shown in the non-competitive programs of numerous festivals, including the Berlin Film Festival, where it participated in the "Forum" program. In 2000, Zeldovich presented his film "Moscow," based on a script co-written with Russian writer Vladimir Sorokin. The film, which became a significant event in Russian cinema, was part of the official program at the Venice Film Festival ("Cinema del Presente" competition) and several other festivals. The premiere of his film "Target" (2011), also co-written with Vladimir Sorokin, took place at the Berlin Film Festival, where it participated in the "Panorama" program. His fourth feature film, "Medea" (2021), was part of the official competition program at the Locarno Film Festival.
