Alice Joyce

Alice Joyce (October 1 1890 – October 9 1955) was an American actress who appeared in more than 200 films during the 1910s and 1920s, including the 1923 version of *The Green Goddess* and its 1930 remake of the same title. Director Sidney Olcott of the Kalem Company in New York City gave her her first role, casting her in the 1910 production *The Deacon’s Daughter*. After Kalem acquired the former Essanay Studios property in East Hollywood in October 1913, she was sent to work under director Kenean Buel on the West Coast. Joyce remained with Kalem from 1910 to 1915 and then with Vitagraph from 1916 to 1921 before working independently for various studios; her prominence declined with the arrival of sound films. She was nicknamed “The Madonna of the Screen” because of her striking features and presence. Her final film was made in 1930, after which she and ex‑husband Tom Moore performed on a late vaudeville circuit for a period. Joyce filed for voluntary bankruptcy in 1933, later became active in women’s organizations in the San Fernando Valley, and spent time doing book reviews and sketching for friends.
