André Gide

André Paul Guillaume Gide was a French author noted for his varied writing styles and thematic explorations. He was awarded the 1947 Nobel Prize in Literature and is considered one of France's leading literary figures. His career started within the symbolist movement and later expanded to include critiques of imperialism during the interwar period. Gide wrote more than 50 books and was described in his New York Times obituary as "France's greatest contemporary man of letters." He was also considered by literary scholars as the most significant French writer of the century.
