Biography

Ava Marie DuVernay is an American filmmaker recognized for her contributions to film and television. She has received multiple awards, including two Primetime Emmy Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, a BAFTA Film Award, and a BAFTA TV Award, and has been nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. DuVernay made her directorial debut with *I Will Follow* (2010) and received critical acclaim for her second feature, *Middle of Nowhere* (2012), which won her the directing award in the U.S. dramatic competition at the Sundance Film Festival. She was the first Black woman to achieve that distinction. In 2011, she founded ARRAY, an independent distribution company focused on showcasing films by people of color and women.
