Biography

Barbara Bush served as First Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993, as the wife of President George H. W. Bush. Before that, she was the Second Lady of the United States from 1981 to 1989 during her husband’s time as Vice President under Ronald Reagan. She founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Barbara Bush is the mother of George W. Bush, the 43rd U.S. president, and Jeb Bush, the 43rd governor of Florida. She and Abigail Adams are the only two women in U.S. history to have been both the wife of one president and the mother of another. She was known for her warm, apolitical "grandmotherly" image and was widely respected and generally popular during her time as First Lady.
