Biography

Abraham Stoker was born on November 8, 1847, and died on April 20, 1912. He was an Irish author, most renowned for his 1897 Gothic horror novel *Dracula*. During his lifetime, he was more widely recognized for his work as the personal assistant to actor Sir Henry Irving and as the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre, which Irving owned. Prior to writing *Dracula*, Stoker served as a theatre critic for an Irish newspaper and contributed to various stories. He married Florence Balcombe and had one child with her. Stoker was also an avid traveler, particularly visiting Cruden Bay, where he set two of his novels. His travels also included the English coastal town of Whitby, which partially inspired *Dracula*. Stoker died on April 20, 1912, of "Locomotor ataxia 6 months" and was cremated.
