Cissy Houston

Emily "Cissy" Houston was an American soul and gospel singer who began her career in a family gospel group, the Drinkard Singers. By the early 1960s, she became a session vocalist for secular artists across multiple genres. In 1961, she joined her nieces in the Gospelaires and later led the group, which evolved into "the Group." In 1967, Houston founded the Sweet Inspirations with three other vocalists and signed with Atlantic Records. As lead singer, the group recorded four albums before Houston pursued a solo career in 1970. Her notable solo work includes the top 20 R&B hit "I'll Be There" and the top 5 dance single "Think It Over." Houston's solo career earned her two Grammy Awards in the Traditional Gospel Album category.
