Biography

Colin Luther Powell was a prominent American military leader and statesman who served as the 65th United States Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005, becoming the first African American to hold that office. Before his time as Secretary of State, Powell held key roles in U.S. national security, including serving as the 15th National Security Advisor from 1987 to 1989 and the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993. A member of the Republican Party, Powell was the highest-ranking Black American in the federal executive branch until Barack Obama was elected president in 2008. His career reflected a long commitment to public service, spanning both military and diplomatic fields.
