Dai Lin

Linda Lin Dai (Chinese: 林黛; 26 December 1934 – 17 July 1964), born Cheng Yueru (程月如), was a Chinese actress who appeared in Hong Kong Mandarin-language films during the 1950s and 1960s. She was a prominent star of the Shaw Brothers Studio. She was the daughter of Cheng Siyuan (程思遠), who served as secretary to KMT President Li Zongren and later as Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Lin Dai won the Best Actress award at the Asia Pacific Film Festival four times for her performances in films produced by Shaw Studio. In 1958, while attending short courses in drama and linguistics at Columbia University in New York, she met and fell in love with Long Shengxun, the son of Long Yun, a former governor of Yunnan province. The couple married on 12 February 1961 in Hong Kong.

She died by suicide at her home in Hong Kong in July 1964, using an overdose of sleeping pills and methane gas, reportedly due to family-related issues described by the media as "trivial." Her death shocked the Chinese community. At the time of her death, she left behind two unfinished films: The Lotus Lamp and Blue And Black (I and II).
