Biography

Erin Johnson's short films and immersive installations combine documentary, experimental, and narrative filmmaking techniques to explore themes of collectivity, dissent, and queer identity. Her evolving video works feature site-specific performances by artists, biologists, and film extras, addressing the lasting impacts of scientific research and nationalism.

Johnson earned an MFA and Certificate in New Media from UC Berkeley in 2013. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in 2019 and has since completed residencies at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, NY, Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, NL, Lower Manhattan Community Council (LMCC), Hidrante in San Juan, PR, and Lighthouse Works on Fishers Island, NY. She currently serves as Chair of the Department of Film and Video at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work has been recently exhibited or screened at MOCA Toronto in Toronto, Munchmuseet in Oslo, Times Square Arts in New York, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Boston, Billytown in The Hague, and Telfair Museums in Savannah.
