Eugene Shalit was an American journalist, television personality, film and book critic, and author. He began part-time work on NBC's *The Today Show* in 1970 and became a regular contributor from January 15, 1973, until his retirement on November 11, 2010. Known for his witty commentary and frequent use of puns, Shalit developed a distinctive on-screen persona characterized by an oversized handlebar mustache, fuzzy hair, large glasses, and colorful bow ties.
