Biography

George Miller AO (born 3 March 1945) is an Australian filmmaker who has achieved critical and popular success over four decades, particularly through the Mad Max franchise, which began in 1979. Two of the films in the series have been recognized as two of the greatest action films of all time. He has received numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Golden Globe Award.

Miller gained prominence through directing the dystopian action-adventure films Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2 (1981), and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). He later directed The Witches of Eastwick (1987), a dark fantasy comedy, and Lorenzo's Oil (1992), a biographical medical drama that he also co-wrote, earning a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He produced and co-wrote the family film Babe (1995), which received an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay nomination, and directed its sequel, Babe: Pig in the City (1998).

In 1995, Miller also produced the documentary Video Fool for Love, a cinema verité work that explored film editor Robert Gibson's personal life through hundreds of hours of camcorder footage.

He won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Happy Feet (2006) and directed its sequel, Happy Feet Two (2011). He returned to the Mad Max series with Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), which received critical acclaim and won six Academy Awards, with Miller receiving a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director. He later directed the prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024).

Trained in medicine at the University of New South Wales, Miller worked as a physician for several years before transitioning to a full-time career in film. He is a co-founder of the production companies Kennedy Miller Mitchell, formerly known as Kennedy Miller, and Dr. D Studios. Following the death of his producing partner Byron Kennedy, his younger brother Bill Miller and Doug Mitchell have produced his more recent films.
