Biography
Giovanni Buttarelli was an Italian civil servant who served as the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS). He was appointed to the role on 4 December 2014 by a joint decision of the European Parliament and the Council, beginning a five-year term. From January 2009 to December 2014, he served as Assistant EDPS. Prior to his tenure at the EDPS, Buttarelli was a member of the Italian judiciary, holding the rank of judge at the Court of Cassation, Italy's highest judicial authority.
