He initially studied theater at the School of Theater at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, but decided to transfer to their film school after a year. In 1977, he graduated from CalArts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film. Two years after graduating, he started a sound editing company called Mag City, Inc.
