Biography

Ernest George Harcourt Williams was an English actor and director known for his contributions to theatre. Beginning his career with touring companies, he later became a prominent character actor and director in the West End. From 1929 to 1934, he served as director of The Old Vic theatre company, where he recruited notable actors such as John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson. After directing over fifty plays, he stepped down from the directorship but remained active in the company's productions. In his later years, Williams appeared in approximately thirty cinema and television roles, extending his influence beyond the stage.
