Hasan El-Emam

Hassan El Imam was an Egyptian director born in Mansoura in 1919. He attended a French school in Cairo, and after his father’s death during a financial crisis he began working early to support his family, initially as a translator because he spoke English and French. He later entered the film industry as an assistant director to Youssef Wahba. El Imam’s directorial career began amid a period dominated by melodramas and tragic stories, influences that shaped his style and aesthetic; his films achieved blockbuster status despite continual criticism from reviewers, a pattern that persisted after his death. His debut as a director was the 1946 film “Mala'ikat Gohanam” (Hell’s Angels). Notable works from this early period include “Al Yatimatan” (The Two Orphans) in 1948 and “Zalamoony Elnas” (People Oppressed Me) in 1950. In 1962 he entered a new phase by substituting for director Salah Abu Seif on the adaptation of Naguib Mahfouz’s novel “Bein El Qasrein” (Between the Two Palaces). He continued directing successful adaptations of Mahfouz’s novels, such as “Zuqaq Almidaq” (Almidaq Alley) in 1963, “Qasr Elshouq” (Palace of Longing) in 1966, and “Alsokkareya” in 1973, though critics accused him of damaging the source material. During the 1970s he moved away from melodramas toward comedies and musical films that also performed well commercially; his 1972 comedy “Khally Balak men Zuzu” (Take Care of Zuzu) ran for over a year in theaters and became one of Egypt’s highest‑grossing films, prompting further musical projects such as “Hekayty ma'a Elzaman” (My Story with Time) and “Amira Hobby Ana” (Amira My Love). He co‑wrote most of his films and drew inspiration from French popular stories and fairy tales. Hassan El Imam died on 29 January 1988 at the age of 66.
