Helena Vondráčková

Helena Vondráčková (born 24 June 1947 in Prague) is a Czech singer whose career has spanned five decades.

Vondráčková spent her childhood in the town of Slatiňany and took piano lessons from an early age. In 1964 she gained prominence by winning a national talent contest, and on 27 April that year she made her first recording—a Czech rendering of “Red River Valley” titled “Červená řeka.” In 1965, the year she graduated high school, Vondráčková was voted the most popular singer in Czechoslovakia by readers of *Mladý svět*, earning the Golden Nightingale award for the only time in her career; she later placed second or third a total of twenty‑seven times, receiving eleven Silver Nightingale awards and sixteen Bronze Nightingale awards. In the summer of 1966 she began competing at music festivals, entering the inaugural Bratislavská Lýra as a duo with Marta Kubišová; their song “Oh Baby Baby” won the second‑place Silver Lyre award. Her solo festival debut was at the Rio de Janeiro International Music Festival in November 1967, where her entry “Vzdálený hlas” received the Golden Rooster award. In June 1968 she returned to Bratislavská Lýra as a duo with Waldemar Matuška, earning a Bronze Lyre for “To se nikdo nedoví,” and in 1969 she participated in the European Cup Festival in Knokke, Belgium.

After reaching #2 on the Czechoslovak hit parade with the Kubišová duet “Oh Baby Baby,” Vondráčková achieved a #1 position in September 1967 with “Nedoufej,” a Czech version of Sonny & Cher’s “Little Man.” She recorded several Czech‑language cover versions for the Supraphon label, including “Pátá” (“Downtown”), “Chytila Jsem Motýlka” (“I Only Want to Be with You”) and “Růže kvetou dál,” a rendition of Gilbert Bécaud’s “L’Important c’est la Rose,” which gave her a second #1 in November 1967, remaining in the Top Ten until March 1968. She returned to the Top Ten in 1968 with “Hej, Pane Zajíci!”—a duet with Marta Kubišová—and with a Czech version of “Gli Occhi miei” titled “Utíkej.” Vondráčková’s debut album, *Růže kvetou dál*, was released in 1969 as a compilation of her singles issued from 1964 onward.
