Biography

William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey (June 24, 1895 – May 31, 1983), known by the nicknames "Kid Blackie" and "The Manassa Mauler," was an American professional boxer who competed from 1914 to 1927. He held the world heavyweight championship from 1919 to 1926. A prominent figure of the 1920s, Dempsey was recognized for his aggressive style and powerful punching, which contributed to his widespread popularity. Several of his bouts set financial and attendance records, including the first gate to exceed one million dollars. Dempsey is ranked tenth on The Ring magazine's list of all-time heavyweights and seventh on its Top 100 Greatest Punchers. In 1950, the Associated Press named him the greatest fighter of the previous 50 years. He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and was inducted into The Ring's Boxing Hall of Fame in 1951.
