Biography

Jane Darwell was an American actress who worked in stage, film, and television. She appeared in more than 100 major films over five decades, with her most notable role as the matriarch of the Joad family in the film adaptation of John Steinbeck's *The Grapes of Wrath*. Her performance in that role earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Darwell's long and distinguished career is commemorated by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
