Biography
Jean Anouilh was a French dramatist and screenwriter whose work ranged from high drama to absurdist farce. He rose to prominence with his 1944 adaptation of Sophocles' *Antigone*, which was seen as a subtle critique of the Vichy government during World War II, despite passing censorship. Anouilh's plays are characterized by clear structure and eloquent dialogue, setting them apart from the more experimental works of his contemporaries. A prolific writer in post-war France, his works frequently examine themes of integrity and moral compromise in a complex world.
