Jean Hersholt

Jean Hersholt was a prominent figure in Hollywood, known for his contributions to film and his deep personal commitment to the arts. Born into a well-known Danish stage and entertainment family, he was a regular cast member during his youth as the family toured Europe. He studied at the Copenhagen Art School and continued to develop his stage experience, deciding early on to pursue a career in film. Hersholt appeared in two silent films in Germany in 1906 before emigrating to the United States in 1913. Unlike many European actors who first performed on Broadway, Hersholt moved directly to Hollywood in 1914, where the film industry was rapidly growing. He began as an extra and gradually took on small roles in features from 1915 through 1917, appearing in no fewer than 17 bit parts in 1917 alone. By the 1920s, his roles had become more substantial, often as villains, which he performed with skill and nuance, drawing praise from directors. His work in silent films included The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921), which helped elevate Rudolf Valentino's career. One of his most significant roles was as Marcus Schouler in Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1924), based on the novel McTeague. The film, originally shot on 42 reels and over nine hours long, was drastically edited for release. Hersholt endured extreme conditions during filming, including a grueling shoot in Death Valley, which left him hospitalized after losing 27 pounds. In the late 1920s, his roles diversified, including more virtuous characters and unexpected villains in murder mysteries. He worked with Samuel Goldwyn from 1923 to 1924, for Paramount from 1927 to 1929, and for several other studios. By the end of the silent era, Hersholt had appeared in 75 films. His first all-sound film was The Climax (1930), and his pleasant, mellow voice and on-screen presence ensured continued success. His filmography included roles in Grand Hotel (1932), The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932), and Dinner at Eight (1933). He also expanded into radio in 1930. As a mature actor, Hersholt frequently played doctors, professors, nobles, and fatherly figures. He portrayed the father of Sonja Henie in One in a Million (1936) and the grandfather of Shirley Temple in Heidi (1937). A significant role as a doctor came with The Country Doctor (1936), based on the story of the Dionne Quintuplets and the real-life obstetrician Dr. Dafoe. A sequel, Five of a Kind (1938), followed, though Dr. Dafoe opposed further films in the series. In 1937, Hersholt launched a radio series as Dr. Christian, a kindly small-town doctor, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen. RKO Radio Pictures later produced six Dr. Christian films from 1939 to 1941. Hersholt's passion for Andersen extended to collecting rare editions and translating his works, resulting in a comprehensive English edition of Andersen's fairy tales. He also wrote articles about Andersen and edited The Andersen-Scudder-Letters (1948). Additionally, he co-wrote a novel based on his Dr. Christian character.
