Jenny Seagrove

British actress Jenny Seagrove emerged as a notable presence in 1980s television, particularly in period dramas and romantic adaptations. She gained recognition for her portrayal of Emma Harte in *A Woman of Substance* (1984), based on Barbara Taylor Bradford's novel, and as Paula Fairley in *Hold the Dream* (1986). Earlier, she appeared in *The Woman in White* (1982) and *Diana* (1984). In 2001, she played Jo Mills, QC in the British crime series *Judge John Deed*.

Born Jennifer Ann Seagrove on July 4, 1957, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, she was the daughter of an import-export businessman and a British aristocrat who suffered a severe stroke when Jenny was less than a year old. At age nine, she was sent to a girls' boarding school in England, where she began acting in school productions. Initially interested in becoming a chef, she eventually chose acting and trained at the Bristol Old Vic. She married actor-director Madhav Sharma in 1984, but the marriage ended in 1988. She later had a long-term relationship with director Michael Winner, whom she met on the set of *Appointment with Death* (1988).

Seagrove is well-regarded for her stage performances in England. She played the title role in *Jane Eyre* at Chichester Festival Theatre in 1986 and returned in 1992 as Bett in *King Lear in New York*. Other theatre credits include *The Guardsman* (1986), *Present Laughter* (1993), *The Miracle Worker* (1994), *Dead Guilty* (1995), *Hurlyburly* (1997), *Vertigo* (1998), *Brief Encounter* (2000), *The Odd Couple* (2001–02), *The Constant Wife* (2003), *The Secret Rapture* (2003), *The Night of the Iguana* (2005), *The Letter* (2007), *Absurd Person Singular* (2007), *Murder on Air* (2008), *The Country Girl* (2011), *Fallen Angels* (2014), and *The Exorcist* (2017), in which she portrayed Chris MacNeil. Many of these productions were staged in collaboration with theatre producer Bill Kenwright.

While her film career has not reached the same level as her stage or television work, Seagrove made her British film debut in *Moonlighting* (1982), starring Jeremy Irons. She appeared as a Scottish character in *Local Hero* (1983) and as Sophie in *Nate and Hayes* (1983). She was part of the ensemble in *Appointment with Death* (1988), again with Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot, and appeared in *A Chorus of Disapproval* (1989) with Jeremy Irons. In the U.S., she played a villainous nanny in *The Guardian* (1990) and had a role in the comedy *Bullseye!* (1990).

In later years, Seagrove took on leading roles in films such as *Miss Beatty's Children* (1992), *Don't Go Breaking My Heart* (1999) with Anthony Edwards, *Zoe* (2001), and *Another Mother's Son* (2017), in which she portrayed a woman harboring an escaped Russian POW during World War II.
