Joan Tompkins

In 1938, Joan Tompkins began her career appearing opposite Henry Fonda in a series of plays in White Plains, New York. She later gained recognition for her role as Nora Drake on radio. Throughout her extensive radio career, she also performed on Broadway in productions such as "Pride and Prejudice" and "My Sister Eileen," among others. Joan met actor Karl Swenson, known as "the man of a thousand voices," in a radio studio and eventually married him. The couple later relocated to southern California, where they founded an acting company in Beverly Hills, with Karl serving as director and Joan as an actress. Following Karl's death in 1978, Joan transitioned to a new career, establishing a writing group. She authored several books and served as a thoughtful critic and supportive figure to the group's members, many of whom went on to publish their own works. Joan Tompkins died on January 29, 2005, at her home in Orange County, California, at the age of 89. She was survived by four stepsons, their children, and grandchildren.
