Biography

John Legend, born John Roger Stephens, is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and record producer. He began his career working behind the scenes, playing piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" and contributing as an uncredited backing vocalist on tracks by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. He signed with Kanye West's GOOD Music as the label's first artist, leading to the release of his debut studio album, *Get Lifted* (2004). The album was preceded by the hit single "Ordinary People" and reached the top ten on the Billboard 200, earning double platinum certification from the RIAA.
