Biography

John Herrick McIntire was an American character actor known for his appearances in theatrical films and television series. He is particularly recognized for replacing Ward Bond as the star of NBC's *Wagon Train* in early 1961, following Bond's sudden death in November 1960. McIntire portrayed Christopher Hale, the leader of the wagon train, until the series ended in 1965. Later, he took over the role of ranch owner Clay Grainger on NBC's *The Virginian* after Charles Bickford's death in 1967, a role he played for four seasons.
