Biography

John McLoughlin, also known as Jean-Baptiste McLoughlin, was a prominent figure in the Hudson's Bay Company, serving as Chief Factor and Superintendent of the Columbia District at Fort Vancouver from 1824 to 1845. Born a French-Canadian, he later became an American and played a significant role in the development of the Oregon Country. McLoughlin is often referred to as the "Father of Oregon" due to his support for American settlers in the region. After leaving the company, he established a general store in Oregon City in the late 1840s, which became a well-known final stop for travelers on the Oregon Trail.
