Biography
John Woods Whittle was an Australian soldier and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy within the British and Commonwealth armed forces. During the First World War, Whittle served as a sergeant and was honored for his bravery in two separate actions against German forces during their retreat to the Hindenburg Line in 1917. In one of these actions, he courageously attacked a German machine gun crew, killing the members and capturing the weapon. Whittle's acts of valor exemplified the extreme bravery for which the Victoria Cross is awarded.
