Biography

Johnny Weissmuller (born Johann Peter Weißmüller; June 2, 1904 – January 20, 1984) was an Austro-Hungarian-born American swimmer and actor. A top swimmer in the 1920s, Weissmuller earned five Olympic gold medals and one bronze medal. He also won fifty-two U.S. National Championships and set sixty-seven world records. Following his swimming career, he became the sixth actor to portray Tarzan in films, appearing in twelve motion pictures in the role. While dozens of other actors have played Tarzan, Weissmuller is the most widely recognized. His character's distinctive, ululating Tarzan yell is still frequently used in films.
