Biography

José Palma y Velásquez was a Filipino poet and soldier best known for writing "Filipinas," a patriotic poem in Spanish. The poem was first published on September 3, 1899, in the first anniversary issue of the newspaper *La Independencia*. "Filipinas" was set to the instrumental tune "Marcha Nacional Filipina" composed by Julián Felipe, and it later became the basis for every translation of the Philippine National Anthem. Palma's work remains a significant part of Philippine cultural and national heritage.
