Biography

Joshua Logan began directing plays while still a student at Princeton, with Henry Fonda and James Stewart among the first actors he directed. His graduation was postponed so he could accompany a classmate to Russia to study with Konstantin Stanislavski, the founder of "method acting." Stanislavski advised him, "To be truly creative you must find your own way, you must not follow some old Stanislavski method." Influenced by Stanislavski's emphasis on the writer's role, Logan was most proud of the plays and films he both wrote and directed. His second wife was the widow of actor Walter Connolly, who was nine years his senior. Logan published his autobiography in 1976 and died in 1988.
