Juliusz Osterwa

Juliusz Osterwa, born Julian Andrzej Maluszek, was a notable Polish actor, theatre director, and art theoretician active during the interwar period. He is best known for founding Theatre Reduta, Warsaw's first experimental stage following Poland's return to independence after World War I. Osterwa began his career in Warsaw at the age of 33 by staging works by Poland's leading revolutionary dramatists, including Juliusz Słowacki, Stanisław Wyspiański, Stefan Żeromski, Jerzy Szaniawski, Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer, and Cyprian Norwid. His ensemble, often referred to as the actor's commune, was likened to an ascetic monastery dedicated to spiritual and artistic practice.
