Biography

Kentarou Miura was born in Chiba City, Japan, in 1966. While attending Nihon University, he debuted a 48‑page manga titled *Berserk Prototype* in 1988, which introduced the fantasy world later developed in *Berserk* and earned him a prize from the Comi Manga School. After receiving a doctorate degree in 1989, Miura began a project called *King of Wolves*, based on a script by Buronson, the writer of *Hokuto no Ken* (Fist of the North Star). The first volume of *Berserk* was released in 1990 with modest success, and Miura again collaborated with Buronson on a manga titled *Japan*. His profile rose when *Berserk* entered the “Golden Age” arc, establishing him as a prominent contemporary manga artist. He subsequently devoted himself exclusively to *Berserk*, though he has indicated an intention to publish additional manga in the future; the series has reached 35 volumes with no announced conclusion. In 1997 Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of *Berserk* that aired on NTV, and various art books and supplemental materials based on the series have been released. The franchise has generated a range of merchandise, including statues, action figures, key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002 Miura received second place in the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize of Excellence for *Berserk*.
