Biography
M. Emmet Walsh, born in Ogdensburg, New York, built a six‑decade career as a prolific Hollywood character actor noted for work in drama, comedy and thrillers. He grew up in rural New York and Vermont while his father served as a customs officer on the northern border, later earned a degree from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, and began acting in off‑Broadway productions before moving to screen roles in the 1960s. His gravelly voice, distinctive features and ability to add depth to small parts led to frequent television appearances; during the 1970s he appeared on crime series such as *The Streets of San Francisco* and *Kojak*, and later held recurring comedic roles on *The Bob Newhart Show* and *Frasier*, with additional guest spots on *Mad About You* and *Curb Your Enthusiasm*. Walsh’s most prominent film work includes the role of private investigator Loren Visser in the Coen brothers’ 1984 neo‑noir *Blood Simple*, police officer Bryant in *Blade Runner* (1982), parts in *Raising Arizona* (1987) and *Fletch* (1985), and the father in *Harry and the Hendersons* (1987); he also appeared in *The Jerk* (1979) and *A Time to Kill* (1996). He died of cardiac arrest on March 19, 2024 at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, Vermont, leaving more than 200 screen credits.
