Biography

Mara Brock Akil is an American television producer and writer known for her work on popular sitcoms. She began her screenwriting career at age 23 with the Fox series *South Central* (1994). At age 30, she became the youngest African American showrunner on a broadcast network with her creation of *Girlfriends*, which aired on UPN from 2000 to 2006 and later on The CW until 2008. She also created the spin-off *The Game*, which aired on The CW from 2006 to 2009 and was later revived on BET from 2011 to 2015. Brock Akil made history as the first African American female showrunner to have two series concurrently on broadcast network television.
