Biography

Matthew Chandler Fox was born in Abington, Pennsylvania. His mother, Loretta B. Eagono, worked as a schoolteacher, and his father, Francis G. Fox, was an oil‑company consultant who raised longhorn cattle and horses and grew barley for Coors beer. He is of Italian descent through his maternal grandfather, as well as English and Irish ancestry. After high school he spent a post‑graduate year at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts before enrolling at Columbia University, where he played football and majored in economics with the intention of pursuing a career on Wall Street. A modeling agent who was his girlfriend’s mother encouraged him to try modeling, leading to several television commercials and eventually to acting. He made his television debut in an episode of “Wings” in 1992. From 1994 to 2000 he portrayed Charlie Salinger on *Party of Five* alongside Neve Campbell and Scott Wolf. Between 2004 and 2010 he starred in the series *Lost*. During that period he appeared in the films *We Are Marshall* (2006), *Vantage Point* (2008) and *Speed Racer* (2008). He has been married to Margherita since 1992, and they have two children, a daughter and a son.
