Biography
Moshe "Mauritz" Stiller was born on July 17, 1883, in Helsinki, Finland. A director, writer, and actor, he began his artistic career in the theatre, performing as an actor at the age of 16. Between 1899 and 1916, he portrayed 87 roles and directed 16 productions from 1911 to 1928. In 1912, along with Viktor Sjöström (a director, actor, and writer), he was recruited as a director and actor by Charles Magnusson at AB Svenska Biografteatern to work in the Swedish film industry. Stiller's films were immediately successful, and in his first year alone, he directed six feature films. "Herr Arnes pengar" (1919), "Erotikon" (1920), and "Gösta Berlings saga" (1923) are considered three major milestones in Swedish film production. In "Gösta Berlings saga," Greta Garbo, at 18 years old, made her first major film appearance. Garbo and Stiller became close friends and allies. Stiller introduced Garbo to the German audience in 1925, before the two traveled to the USA to make "The Temptress" for Paramount/Irving Thalberg in 1926. From 1912 to 1927, Stiller directed 51 feature films and appeared as an actor in seven productions. He died on November 8, 1928, at 1:05 am in Stockholm, after undergoing numerous surgeries; an abscess of the lung ended the life of the artist.
