Biography

Mikijirō Hira was a Japanese actor who began his career on stage in the 1950s and remained active in film, television, and theater until his death. Known for his Shakespearean roles, he became a prominent figure in Japanese performing arts, particularly through his collaborations with director Yukio Ninagawa starting in the 1970s. His acclaimed performance as Macbeth is among his most notable stage roles. Recognized as "Japan's best Shakespearean actor," Hira received numerous awards, including an excellence award at the 2011 National Arts Festival hosted by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs.
