Biography
Miyoshi Umeki was a Japanese and American singer and actress, best known for being the first East Asia-born woman to win an Academy Award for acting. She received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in *Sayonara* (1957). Umeki was also a three-time Golden Globe nominee and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in *Rodgers and Hammerstein's Flower Drum Song*. Her career spanned film, television, and theater, and she was recognized for her contributions to both American and Japanese entertainment.
