Biography

Monte Collins (also credited as Monty Collins; December 3, 1898 – June 1, 1951) was an American film actor and screenwriter who appeared in 167 films from 1920 to 1948 and wrote for 32 films between 1930 and 1951.

In the late 1920s he starred in silent short comedies produced by Educational Pictures, often under director Jules White; his dapper appearance and pencil moustache were noted. The transition to sound did not hinder his career, as he lacked a fixed screen persona, and he adapted easily to talkies, appearing with Vernon Dent in the early sound short “Ticklish Business,” though he never achieved major comedy-star status and continued through the 1930s in secondary roles such as businessmen, butlers, soldiers, and salesmen in both features and shorts.

One of his final credits was providing material for Laurel and Hardy’s last film, Atoll K (1951), a French‑Italian production that listed “Gags by Monty Collins” in its credits. He was preparing to begin work in television when he died of a heart attack in 1951 at the age of 52.
