Biography

Nicolas Cage was born Nicolas Kim Coppola in Long Beach, California, the son of comparative literature professor August Coppola (whose brother is director Francis Ford Coppola) and dancer and choreographer Joy Vogelsang. He is of Italian (father) and Polish and German (mother) descent. Cage changed his name early in his career to establish his own identity, going on to achieve success with a series of distinctive roles by the late 1980s. He initially studied theatre at Beverly Hills High School, though he left at seventeen. He secured a minor role in *Fast Times at Ridgemont High* (1982), but most of his scenes were cut, leading him to take a job selling popcorn at the Fairfax Theater. While there, he landed a role in his uncle Francis Ford Coppola’s *Rumble Fish* (1983) after working with actors auditioning for it, followed by the romantic lead in *Valley Girl* (1983), which was released first and marked the true start of his career. His commitment to method acting reached a personal extreme when he destroyed a street vendor's remote-control car to capture the rage needed for his gangster character in *The Cotton Club* (1984). In his early 20s, he was in a two-year relationship with Jenny Wright and later dated Uma Thurman. After a several-year relationship with model Christina Fulton, they parted amicably and share custody of their son, Weston Cage (b. 1990). He also has a son with his ex-wife, Alice Kim Cage.
