Biography

Paul Bilhaud was a French playwright and librettist known for his avant-garde contributions to art. His most notable work, *Combat de nègres pendant la nuit*, was first exhibited in 1882 and is considered a precursor to minimalist art, predating Kazimir Malevich's *Black Square* by over thirty years. The painting was lost for decades before being rediscovered in a private collection in 2017–2018 and later declared a National Treasure by the French government. While not the first to create an entirely black artwork—Robert Fludd and Bertall had produced similar works earlier—Bilhaud's piece is among the most significant in the history of monochrome art. His friend, Alphonse Allais, was inspired by Bilhaud and later proposed other monochrome paintings, published in his *Album primo-avrilesque* in 1897.
