Biography

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, was a Brazilian professional footballer who is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Playing as a forward, he achieved significant success and international fame during the 20th century. Pelé scored 1,279 goals in 1,363 games, a Guinness World Record that includes all matches, including friendlies. In 1999, he was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee and appeared on Time magazine's list of the 100 most important people of the 20th century. The following year, he was voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics and was one of two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the Century award, alongside Diego Maradona.
