Biography

Phil Karlson began his career in the film industry while studying law at Loyola Marymount University in California. He started as a prop man at Universal Pictures and gradually took on a variety of roles the studio assigned him, including assistant director on several Bud Abbott and Lou Costello films and directing short subjects. He made his feature film debut in 1944. Although he initially worked for low-budget studios such as Monogram (where he directed several Bowery Boys and Charlie Chan films) and Eagle-Lion, his work was already notable for its concise, tightly constructed scenes and sudden action sequences. In the 1950s, Karlson gained recognition for a series of tough, realistic crime films known for their gritty location shooting and his meticulous attention to detail. Despite the quality of these films, he struggled to move beyond the B-picture realm, making films such as *The Young Doctors* (1961), *Kid Galahad* (1962), and a pair of the poorly received *Matt Helm* films starring Dean Martin. He achieved his greatest commercial success with *Walking Tall* (1973), a film in which he held a large share, making him financially successful.
