Biography
Richard Garriott, born in Cambridge, England in 1961 to an American astronaut father, grew up in Texas steeped in fantasy fiction and Dungeons & Dragons. As a high-school student in the late 1970s he began coding his own D&D-inspired adventures on an Apple II, adopting the alter ego 'Lord British.' One of those experiments, sold in a Ziploc bag from the computer store where he worked, became Akalabeth (1979), the seed of everything to come.
The Ultima series, launched in 1981, made him a founding architect of the CRPG. Across a dozen mainline games he built Britannia, one of gaming's first persistent, richly imagined worlds, with day-night cycles, reactive townsfolk, and continuity from one installment to the next. His landmark was Ultima IV (1985): instead of yet another dark lord to slay, it asked the player to become a moral exemplar, embodying eight virtues like honesty, compassion and valor. It was a radical assertion that games could grapple with ethics and character, not just combat.
With his brother Robert he founded Origin Systems, whose motto, 'We Create Worlds,' captured his ambition. In 1997 Ultima Online helped pioneer the massively multiplayer online RPG, a persistent shared realm whose emergent player economies and social dramas anticipated the genre's future.
The astronaut's son never let go of the real frontier either. In 2008 he flew to the International Space Station as a private astronaut, becoming part of the first parent-and-child pair to reach orbit, and carried gaming and scientific payloads with him.
Garriott's legacy is the marriage of world-building and moral imagination. He proved that a computer game could sustain a living, coherent universe and that it could ask the player to be good, not merely victorious. The virtue-driven design and persistent worlds he championed echo through role-playing games to this day.
