Biography

Richard Gordon is the pen name of Gordon Stanley Ostlere (born 15 September 1921), an English surgeon and anaesthetist. Writing under the name Richard Gordon, Ostlere has authored numerous novels, screenplays for film and television, and works of popular history, primarily focused on the practice of medicine. He is best known for a long series of comic novels with a medical theme, beginning with *Doctor in the House*, which was adapted into film, television, radio, and stage productions. He published *The Alarming History of Medicine* in 1993, followed by *The Alarming History of Sex*.
