Biography
"Sharif" is a title used to denote a person who is, or claims to be, descended from the family of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The term can be used in three distinct ways. In the broadest sense, it refers to any descendant of Muhammad's great-grandfather Hashim, including those from Muhammad's paternal uncles, Abu Talib and al-Abbas. More commonly, it refers to descendants of Ali, a son of Abu Talib and a paternal cousin of Muhammad, especially those through Ali's marriage to Muhammad's daughter Fatima. In the narrowest sense, "Sharif" refers specifically to descendants of Hasan, the eldest son of Fatima and Ali. In this context, it is contrasted with the term "sayyid," which refers to descendants of Husayn, Hasan's younger brother.
