Biography

Shelley Winters was an American actress with a career spanning seven decades. She adopted the name Shelley in 1943, inspired by her favorite poet and her mother's maiden name. Winters won two Academy Awards for her roles in *The Diary of Anne Frank* (1959) and *A Patch of Blue* (1965), and received Oscar nominations for *A Place in the Sun* (1951) and *The Poseidon Adventure* (1972). She also won a Golden Globe for *The Poseidon Adventure*, an Emmy Award, and was twice nominated for BAFTA Awards. An active member of the Actors Studio, Winters was known for her dedication to her craft and her versatility across film and television.
