Biography

Sherman Alexander Hemsley was an American actor and comedian best known for his role as George Jefferson on the CBS series *All in the Family* and its spin-off *The Jeffersons* (1975–1985). He later portrayed Deacon Ernest Frye on the NBC sitcom *Amen* (1986–1991) and B. P. Richfield on the animated series *Dinosaurs*. Hemsley received critical acclaim for his work on *The Jeffersons*, earning a Golden Globe nomination and an Emmy nomination. In 1982, he won an NAACP Image Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Comedy Series or Special.
