Suzu Hirose

Suzu Hirose (広瀬 すず, born 19 June 1998 in Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka, Shizuoka) is a Japanese actress and model.

Hirose portrayed Suzu Asano, the titular younger sister, in Hirokazu Kore-eda's 2015 live-action adaptation of the manga *Umimachi Diary*, originally written and illustrated by Akimi Yoshida. In *Our Little Sister*, she stars as a football-playing teenager who is adopted into the Kamakura home of her older half-sisters after the death of their estranged father. The Kouda sisters first meet her at the funeral in the town where he had settled for his second marriage. The film was screened in competition for the Palme d'Or, allowing Hirose to attend the Cannes Film Festival. For her role as Suzu, she was awarded the Japan Academy Prize for "Newcomer of the Year" and received the "Best New Actress" award from *Kinema Junpo*, among other honors. Hirose and Kore-eda later collaborated again on *The Third Murder*.

In March 2016, Hirose appeared as a high school student passionate about competitive karuta and the *Ogura Hyakunin Isshu* poetry collection in the first part of Norihiro Koizumi's *Awesome* film series. She played the lead role of Chihaya Ayase in the live-action adaptation of Yuki Suetsugu's comic strip, known in English as *Chihayafuru*. Her performance in the first film, titled *Chihayafuru: Kami no ku* ("Upper Phrase"), was followed by a second part, *Shimo no ku*, released in April of the same year, for which she received "Best Actress" nominations. Hirose reprised her role in the third and final part of the trilogy, *Chihayafuru: Musubi*. Principal photography for this film concluded in June 2017, and it was scheduled for release in Japanese theaters in Heisei 30, the following year.
