Biography

Alan Johnson, born in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, is an award‑winning choreographer noted for his work on Mel Brooks films and for restaging Jerome Robbins’s original choreography in live productions of *West Side Story* in the United States and abroad. He first became associated with *West Side Story* when he made his Broadway debut in the show in 1957. Johnson introduced the musical’s dance style to a broader audience by choreographing several Gap commercials in 2000, an effort that earned him an American Choreography award; he also choreographed advertisements for Dubonnet and Freixenet Champagne. His collaborations have included Shirley MacLaine, Leslie Uggams, Bernadette Peters, Tommy Tune, Chita Rivera and Ann‑Margret. Johnson is a three‑time Emmy winner.
